Education in New Zealand is in a state of crisis. It is fighting a hostile government that does not believe in public education. From broad sweeping curriculum changes, privatisation and union busting through charter schools, a worsening of teachers’ conditions, and the larger social issues facing youth, schools are a focal point of capitalist society’s larger failures.
Hear from a panel of current and former politically minded teachers and organisers on the crisis facing our education system, the actions teachers are taking, and how socialism could seek to address these issues.
Our panelists are:
Haimana ‘Si’ Hirini – Haimana is a secondary teacher of Te Reo Māori, Māori Environmental Science and Social Sciences in Te Awa Kairangi and is also involved with the activist group Te Waka Hourua and the community language initiative, Te Ataarangi.
Kylee – A former Auckland secondary English teacher still working in the education sector.
Adaire Hannah – Communist, unionist and former teacher. Adaire has been involved in militant activity as a member of multiple unions, including the PPTA and NZEI.
